1908 zog sich Grethe nach Unstimmigkeiten mit dem württembergischen König aus dem aktiven kunstpolitischen Leben Stuttgarts an die Nordsee zurück und konzentrierte sich ausschließlich auf die Malerei. Die Krevettenfischer an der flandrischen Küste wurden in den letzten Lebensjahren zu seinem bevorzugten Motiv. Grethe starb am 24. Oktober 1913 im belgischen Seebad Nieuwpoort. Bez. u. re "Carlos Grethe".
