Die Vorlage für die etwas summarische Darstellung des Schäferpaares lieferte ein Kupferstich von dem in Venedig ansässigen deutschen Maler und Kupferstecher Joseph Wagner (1706-1780) nach einem von vier Gemälden von Jacopo Amigoni (um 1685-1752). Besagter Kupferstich mit der Darstellung des „Winters“ gehörte zu einer Folge der „Vier Jahreszeiten“ und entstand wohl um 1745; auf einigen Stichen findet sich auch die Abkürzung „C.P.E.S.“ für das erst 1749 erteilte venezianische Privileg „Cum Privilegio Excellentissimi Senatus“.
