Die Aufschrift am Unteren Bildrand gibt Aufschluss über den im Ordenshabit dargestellten Greis: "Johannes Georgius Steinhauser Ex-Capuciner/ emaliger K.K. Festungs- und Zoll-Capellan/ zu Scharnitz in Tyrol aet[atis] s[uae] 90 Jahr a[nno] 1828". Das aufgeschlagene Buch zeigt einen Psalmentext "Initium Sapientiae Timor Domini" (Die Furcht des Herrn ist der Anfang der Weisheit, Psalm 111,10); sign. li. "pinx. A. Lang". Auf der unten angestückten Holzlatte "R.I.P." Johann Georg Steinhauser (1738-1828), der als Kapuzinerpater im Kloster Feldkirch den Namen Pelagius angenommen hatte, war von 1786 bis 1803 in dem Tiroler Grenzort Scharnitz als landesfürstlicher Landkaplan tätig.
