Zu sehen ist der älteste Sohn Arnold Christophs von Bylandt und seiner Frau Anna Maria Theresia im Alter von 16 Jahren. Das Gemälde wird daher in das Jahr 1721/2 datiert. Es wurde in der Vergangenheit dem niederländischen Porträtmaler Jan Frans Douven (1656-1727) zugeschrieben. Dieser kam 1682 nach Düsseldorf und hatte dort seit 1691 als "Cabinetsmaler" die ranghöchste Stelle am Hofe inne. Eine Zuschreibung an Douven dürfte jedoch aufgrund der etwas unglücklichen Proportionen von Kopf und Arm zweifelhaft sein. Als erstes Kind folgte Johannes Franz seinem Vater Arnold Christoph als Herr zu Rheydt. Er starb 1752 kinderlos, woraufhin das Erbe an seinen jüngeren Bruder gehen sollte, der eine kirchliche Laufbahn eingeschlagen hatte. Links ist das Wappen der Familie Bylandt zu sehen. Darunter steht: "Johannes Franciscus L(iber) B(aro) de Bylandt. Natus A. 1705 12......... aetatis 16."
