Die Lithografie von Bonaventura Weiss entstand der Signatur zufolge im Jahr 1859 und wurde von Georg Küstner gedruckt. Sie zeigt den Verleger Freiherr Johann Georg von Cotta in Halbfigur, die linke Hand in das zugeknöpfte Jackett geschoben. Den Körper hat er leicht nach rechts gedreht, der Blick ist auf die Betrachtenden gerichtet. Cotta hatte zunächst eine diolomatische Laufbahn angestrebt, stieg dann aber in das in Tübingen ansässige Familienunternehmen des Vaters ein. Daneben betätigte er sich politisch und war unter anderem Mitglied des württembergischen Landtags.
