Das Porträt zeigt den Juristen Johann Friedrich Schmid im Dreiviertelprofil von rechts. Er ist in Halbfigur vor schraffiertem Hintergrund dargestellt; in der linken Hand hält er einen Handschuh, in der rechten eine kleine Mappe oder ein gefaltetes Schriftstück. Diese Hand ruht auf einem Buch, das auf einer frontal zur Bildebene verlaufenden Balustrade abgelegt wurde. Das Porträt ist einem fingierten ovalen Rahmen einbeschrieben, der biografische Angaben zum Dargestellten gibt. In den vier Ecken des Blatts ist je ein Medaillon mit allegorischen Darstellungen gezeigt, die sich auf die Person und das Wirken Schmids beziehen.
