Philipp Kilian arbeitete in diesem Porträtstich das Gesicht des evangelischen Theologen Melchior Nicolai sehr fein aus. Der unter anderem in Stuttgart und Tübingen wirkende Nicolai wird bis zur Hüfte fast frontal zur Bildebene stehend gezeigt, in der rechten Hand ein Buch haltend, die linke im Gestus erhoben. Dabei blickt er die Betrachtenden direkt an. Unterhalb des Porträts erscheinen eine Inschrift sowie ein kurzes Gedicht auf Latein und Deutsch, das dem Dargestellten gewidmet ist.
