„Eine einfache Zeichnung dient dazu, etwas auszubrüten, es ans Licht zu bringen. In so kleinem Format und bei einer etwas raschen Ausführung kann man den höchsten Gefühlsausdruck erreichen.“ Diese Aussage Delacroix’s trifft auch auf die ausgestellte Pinselskizze zu, die in expressivem Helldunkel eine erste Bildidee auf das Papier bannt. Delacroix schuf sie bereits während der Vorbereitung seines lithographischen Faust-Zyklus um 1826–1827 und griff offenbar später wieder auf sie zurück, als er 1847 sein Gemälde Der Tod des Valentin schuf.
