In insgesamt drei Reisen (1827-1830, 1845 und 1865) zog es Schirmer nach Italien. Die auf der ersten Reise entstandene idealistische Landschaft zeigt einen weiten Blick über das Tibertal und die Kaiserpaläste auf die Monumentalkuppel von San Pietro. Die rahmenden Baumkulissen und die Bühnenhaftigkeit der Komposition übernimmt Schirmer von seinem künstlerischen Vorbild Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
