In den Jahren 1838 bzw. 1839 veröffentlichte die Schriftstellerin Henriette Paalzow (1788-1847), Schwester des Historienmalers Karl Wilhelm Wach (1787-1845), die jeweils dreibändigen Romane „Godwie Castle“ und „St. Roche“ in Berlin, die äußerst populär wurden. Auch der preußische Hof schätzte die Schriftstellerin. Friedrich Wilhelm IV. gab für das Album seiner Frau Elisabeth bei Schirmer zwei Blätter mit den Romanmotiven in Auftrag. Das in Öl ausgeführte Bildpaar (Inv.Nr.: SFPM-CBS/ 136 und 135) entstand als Vorstudie, die der Maler Schirmer Henriette Paalzow als Geschenk überreichte.
