Die Maske, eine sogenannte »mbuya«, zeigt eingelegte Augen und eine markante Nase, die sich zu den Flügeln hin verbreitet. Die reich verwendeten Materialien wie Kaurischnecken, Bast und Fell für das Gesicht, die Kopfbedeckung und den Hals deuten auf eine Herkunft dieser Maske aus dem Gebiet von West-Kasai, möglicherweise aus Kuba. Vermutlich handelt es sich um eine Tanzmaske, die für einen Initiationsritus eingesetzt wurde.
