Fabian von Dohna war gleich auf doppelte Weise mit Floris Otto Heinrich von Bylandt (1638 - 1701), dem Herrn zu Rheydt, verwandt bzw. verschwägert. Er hatte die Schwester von Floris Frau, Henriette Amalie von Dohna (1626 - 1655), geheiratet, war also sein Schwager. Gleichzeitig war Fabian aber der Cousin von Louise und Henriette Amalie, wodurch ohnehin eine verwandtschaftliche Beziehung bestand. Fabian heiratet nach dem Tod von Henriette Amalie ihre Cousine, Louise Christina von Holland- Brederode (1639 - 1660). Sie war die Tochter Ihrer Tante Luise Christina von Solms-Braunfels, verheiratet mit Wolfart von Holland-Brederode. Fabian blieb also weiterhin verwandtschaftlich zweifach verbunden. Am Hof der Kurfürsten von Brandenburg nahm er einen hohen Rang ein, was sich in der Übernahme wichtiger diplomatischer Aufgaben widerspiegelt. Die Darstellung Fabians orientiert sich an antiken Vorbildern.
