Buitenshuis droegen vrouwen overdag luifelhoeden. De stijve rand, hier verstevigd met metaaldraad, beschermde hen tegen de zon en sloot nauw langs de oren. De beige katoen is bedrukt met fijne zwarte strepen en versierd met ruches en strikken. Variaties op de luifelhoed werden doorheen de hele negentiende eeuw gedragen. Het materiaal kon bestaan uit katoen, zijde of stro en de stijl kon eenvoudig zijn of versierd met bloemen en linten.
