A portrait bust of an elderly man in the veristic style, this head is an imitation of a Roman funerary relief of Publius Aiedius Amphio (Berlin, Pergamonmuseum, Sk 840). The bottom of the neck is worked for insertion into a statue. The man depicted has very distinctive facial features. The face is a mass of loose, wrinkled skin. Baggy jowls hang off the cheeks on either side of the mouth and the neck skin underneath the chin has many deep folds. The skin around the mouth is also loose giving it a twisted appearance. Deep lines run from the nose to the mouth as well as under and around the small eyes, and on the brow. The head is round and bald. Chips are missing from the right side of the nose and right cheek. The marble is slightly yellow with spots of brown on the face and back of the head.
