It became popular in the Victorian era to exchange small studio portrait photographs in the _carte-de-visite _format with friends and family. A _carte-de-visite _measures 3 ½ x 2 1/8 inches, about the size of a playing card, and is mounted on stiff board. People also collected portraits of Queen Victoria, the royal family, actors, and military heroes. A woman’s collection of portraits visually displayed her social circle and favorite celebrities. The _cartes-de-visite_ could be inserted in specially manufactured album pages that came with slots. They often appeared in the same album as full-page collages that combined photographs and drawings in ink and watercolor. The compiler and presumed artist of this album clearly had a fascination with the queen and her family. In the case of this cabinet card—a slightly larger version of a _carte-de-visite_ measuring 6 ¼ x 6 ½ inches—of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) (84.XA.1252.36), she framed the image with watercolor ornamentation.
