The statuette depicts a warrior with slim build striding forward with his left leg advanced. In the pierced fist of his raised right hand he once held a weapon, probably a spear. His left arm is held forward from his body, with the fist clenched. Long tangs beneath the figure's feet were designed to attach it to a base, and identify it as a votive figure, which was dedicated as an offering to the gods in shrines and sanctuaries. The elongated limbs of this spear bearer are characteristic of bronzes made in Umbria, a region of central Italy adjacent to Etruria. Naked youths brandishing a weapon were a frequent subject in both Umbrian and Etruscan art. As seen here, Umbrian artists frequently drew on Etruscan prototypes, but rendered the statuettes in a distinctive local style. This statuette combines a realistically proportioned torso and attenuated arms and legs.
