The head belongs to a statue representing a male figure with a close beard that covers the lower chin. The hair is plaited in a chevron pattern over the forehead and then arranged in diagonal rows to the crown of the head and at the sides. The back of the head is flat. The eyes are almond-shaped and placed at a slight upward slant. The cheeks protrude slightly just below the eyes. The mouth is a narrow channel curved slightly upward. The Getty’s head is an example of an Egyptianizing votary, which has the hair arranged in an Egyptian type of wig plaited with strings. The influence of Egyptian sculpture on the statuary of Cyprus was especially strong in the sixth century B.C.
