Johan Maurits – de oorspronkelijke bewoner van het Mauritshuis – was al bijna 50 jaar dood toen Van Logteren dit aardewerken beeldje van hem maakte. Waarschijnlijk is het een ontwerp voor een groot beeld dat bij Van Logteren werd besteld, hoewel er over zo’n opdracht niets bekend is. De graaf is ten voeten uit afgebeeld, gekleed als vorstelijk heerser met een statieharnas, een helm, een zwaard en een aanvoerdersstaf.
