Ein alter Mann mit Vollbart sitzt auf Felsen vor einer Fjordlandschaft. Hinter ihm erhebt sich ein mächtiger Baum, seitlich vor ihm steht ein Kind. Munch stellt die "Geschichte" hier nicht als Allegorie in antikisierendem Gewand dar, sondern in Gestalt eines alten Arbeiters vor heimischer Landschaft, der einem Kind die "Geschichte" erzählt. Das Blatt entstand im Zusammenhang mit dem gleichnamigen großformatigen Gemälde, das Munch zwischen 1909 und 1916 für die Universitätsaula in Oslo (damals Kristiania) schuf.
