Each of these four plaques is composed of a framed octagonal panel of solid ebony inset with nine round examples of hardstones. Beginning in the 1700s, specimen panels of *pietre dure* became popular as celebrations of nature's beauty and of the human ability to scientifically classify such marvels. These framed plaques might have ornamented a study in an elegant Italian palace in the 1800s. As portable examples of *pietre dure* inlay, they might also have functioned as Grand Tour souvenirs for tourists returning home from Florence.
