Die Schlachterszene, 1926 in Berlin entstanden, ist ein Großstadtbild, kein ländliches Idyll. Der Schlächter und sein saufender Kumpan sehen aus wie Zuhälter, und das ist offenbar kein Zufall, denn das Elend der Prostitution scheint das eigentliche Thema des Gemäldes zu sein. Der kritische Blick auf die Unterwelt der Zwanzigerjahre erinnert an Bilder von Georges Grosz oder Otto Dix. 1932 zieht Kleinschmidt von Berlin nach Süddeutschland, wo er zunächst in Klingenstein bei Blaubeuren, dann in Ulm wohnt.
