Das Gemälde des aus Uruguay stammenden Carlos Grethe (1864-1913) ist zwischen 1906 und 1909 entstanden und zeigt die ruhende Segelmanschaft einer Yacht im Hamburger Hafen. Grethe war im Alter von fünf Jahren mit seinen Eltern nach Hamburg gezogen, wo er Kindheit und Schulzeit verbrachte. In dieser Zeit entwickelte sich seine lebenslange Verbundenheit mit Meer und Schiffahrt, einem zentralen Thema im künstlerischen Schaffen Grethes. Ab 1899 war Grethe an der Stuttgarter Kunstakademie als Lehrer tätig und machte hier, wie schon zuvor in Karlsruhe, als aktiver Kunstpolitiker von sich reden.
