A winged feline sits erect on its back legs. The wings extend upward from mid-torso and are composed of stylized feathers. The feline's mouth is open with bared teeth and protruding tongue. The body was hollow cast in two separate pieces which are joined by rivets below the wings. The struts and tenons projecting behind the head and below the paws of this object indicate that it likely functioned as one of three figural supports of a tripod base. Style and technique suggest that this winged feline was made in southern Iberia, a region where bronze sculptures were produced in large numbers. The mythical creature was likely introduced to Iberia by the Phoenicians, who founded settlements to exploit the deposits of precious tin and silver. The mixture of local features, such as the stylized ears and teeth, with the traditional Phoenician treatment of wing feathers demonstrates the influence of immigrant craftsmen on a native Iberian workshop.
