Im 17. Jahrhundert gab es in den Niederlanden nur sehr wenige Künstlerinnen. Die bekannteste war Rachel Ruysch. In der Amsterdamer Malergilde waren Frauen nicht zugelassen, sie wurde aber als erste Frau Mitglied der Gilde in Den Haag. 1708 ernannte sie Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz zur Hofmalerin in Düsseldorf. Die Tochter eines Botanikers spezialisierte sich auf Blumenstillleben. Für die Darstellung des Nachtfalters drückte sie echte Schmetterlingsflügel auf den präparierten Malgrund, sodass die Schuppen darauf haften blieben. Diese Technik hatte sie bei dem Maler Marseus van Schrieck kennengelernt. Dorothee Hansen
