Auf den ersten Blick handelt es sich um eine alltägliche Szene: Eine Mutter steht mit ihrem Kind an der Tür. Doch der Maler hat hier die alte christliche Bildtradition von Maria mit dem Jesuskind auf eine gewöhnliche Situation übertragen. Dabei betont er die menschliche Seite der fürsorglichen Mutterliebe. Van Ostade gilt als ein Meister der niederländischen Genremalerei. Als Maler, Zeichner und Grafiker hat er fast ausschließlich Motive aus dem Leben der Bauern, Handwerker und fahrenden Leute geschaffen. Dorothee Hansen
