Ebenso wie Maurice Denis hatte Bonnard an der Académie Julian in Paris studiert und 1888 zu den Gründern der Künstlergruppe Nabis gehört. Seit 1909 lebte er mit seiner späteren Frau Marthe überwiegend in Südfrankreich. Sie stand ihm für dieses Bild auf einer Terrasse in Grasse Modell. Das südliche Licht bringt die Farben zum Leuchten. Zugleich ist Bonnards Auseinandersetzung mit der impressionistischen Malerei von Claude Monet und Pierre-Auguste Renoir, mit denen er in regem Austausch stand, zu erkennen. Er malte jedoch nicht wie sie unmittelbar vor der Natur, sondern seine Werke sind Erinnerungsbilder, die er auf der Basis von Skizzen im Atelier schuf.
