Adele Wolde (1852–1932) war die Tochter des Bremer Kaufmanns Ludwig Knoop, der 1852 in Russland durch seine Textilfabriken reich geworden war. Sie hatte den Bremer Bankier Johann Georg Wolde geheiratet. Dieser ließ sich bereits 1907 von Liebermann porträtieren. Drei Jahre später bestellte seine Frau ihr Bildnis. In ihrem Haus an der Contrescarpe gab das Paar Feste für den Bremer Freundeskreis „Die Goldene Wolke“, zu dem neben Gustav Pauli etwa die Schriftsteller Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Hermann Graf Keyserling und Rudolf Alexander Schröder gehörten. Heute hat der Bremer Senator für Inneres seinen Amtssitz in der ehemaligen Villa Wolde.
