In diesem Bild verbinden sich Porträt, Blumenstillleben und Genreszene. Ähnliche Kombinationen sind auch in Werken von Gustave Courbet, Frédéric Bazille oder Henri Fantin-Latour zu finden. Scholderer lebte lange in Paris. Hier hatte er engen Kontakt zu jenen französischen Kollegen und zu Édouard Manet. Fantin-Latour porträtierte Scholderer 1870 in dem berühmten Gruppenbildnis Ein Atelier im Batignolles-Viertel: Darin steht er mit französischen Künstlern hinter Manet, der gerade Zacharie Astruc malt (Musée d’Orsay, Paris). Dessen Porträt befindet sich heute in der Kunsthalle (Inv. Nr. 88-1909/1). Dorothee Hansen
