Obwohl sich Dupré selten im Wald von Fontainebleau aufhielt, wird er zu den Künstlern von Barbizon gezählt, die in dem Dorf am Waldrand logierten, um in der Umgebung Freilichtstudien zu machen. Dupré arbeitete häufig in Cayeux-sur-Mer an der normannischen Küste, wo auch dieses Bild entstand. Hier fängt er die Abendstimmung ein: Das Wasser ist ganz still, doch die Wolken bauschen sich und erzeugen leuchtend orangefarbene Lichteffekte, die sich auf dem Wasser spiegeln. Der Kunsthändler Paul Durand-Ruel fand reißenden Absatz für Duprés Seestücke in London. Ihre dramatischen Lichteffekte erinnern an die Werke William Turners.
