Evanđelist stoji u laganom okretu na niskoj bazi. U udubini koju tvore lijeva povučena noga i istaknuto koljeno desne noge smjestio se mali, vitki anđeo s tintarnicom u lijevoj ruci, koji podignutom desnicom podupire knjigu i balansira ju na tjemenu. Matej je u savinutoj lijevoj ruci nad tom knjigom držao pero (podlaktica s perom odlomljena). Odjeven je u dugačku košulju dugih rukava, stegnutu u struku, koja pada do gležnja, a kroz tijesno pripijenu košuljicu anđela naziru se oblici tijela. Plašt je ogrnut oko cijele grupe kao folija u teškim, pastoznim naborima. Evanđelistova glava ima tipič…
