In einem Amsterdamer Café hatte Beckmann diese Frau gesehen, später malte er ihr Bildnis aus der Erinnerung. Das aufgeschlagene Buch deutet an, dass sie allein am Tisch saß. Durch die Balustrade im Hintergrund, die übereinandergelegten Hände und die Kapuze auf dem Kopf wirkt die Frau von ihrer Umgebung abgeschottet. Sie schaut sinnend vor sich hin, während der Künstler sie beobachtete. Manuela Husemann
