Auf Winterbilder und Mondscheinlandschaften hatte sich Van der Neer spezialisiert. Trotz seiner großen Produktivität als Künstler gelangte er nie zu Wohlstand. Eine eigene Gastwirtschaft musste er nach drei Jahren überschuldet wieder schließen. Berühmt wurde er erst nach seinem Tod. Im frühen 19. Jahrhundert entdeckten Maler der Romantik wie Caspar David Friedrich seine Bilder. Doch während Friedrich ein mystisches Naturerlebnis beschwört, beschreibt Van der Neer eine beschauliche, vertraute Welt, belebt von ruhendem Vieh, einem Dorf und Segelbooten.
