Die Komposition dieser Kreuzigung ist ungewöhnlich klar gegliedert. Mittig zeigt Delacroix Jesus am Kreuz, direkt von vorn gesehen. Seine Füße befinden sich auf der Höhe des Horizonts, sodass Christus allein vor dem Himmel erscheint. Im unteren Bilddrittel wirkt die Gruppe um die ohnmächtige Maria links fast wie ein zusammenhanglos eingefügtes, verkleinertes Zitat. Für das Motiv der Maria Magdalena, die rechts das Blut Jesu unter dem Kreuz auffängt, gibt es keine Vorbilder. Delacroix malte das Werk als Geschenk für den befreundeten Architekten Roché und dessen Frau.
