Ein Mädchen aus der Nachbarschaft des Künstlers in Saint-Germain-en-Laye saß Modell für dieses Bildnis. Das Kleid und die Puppe sind in großen Zügen angelegt, nur das Gesicht hat Denis fein modelliert. Die Konzentration auf Blau- und Rosatöne ist typisch für jene Phase seines Schaffens. Denis hatte 1888 zu den Gründern der Künstlergruppe Nabis gehört. Nachdem er 1895 in Italien gewesen war, löste er sich von der summarischen Formensprache der Nabis und orientierte sich zunehmend an einem klassischen Ideal. Das ist am Gesicht dieses Mädchens bereits zu erkennen.
