1937 ging Beckmann ins niederländische Exil. Zehn Jahre verbrachte er in Amsterdam. Als deutsche Truppen am 10. Mai 1940 die Niederlande überfielen, wurde der Flughafen Schiphol durch Bombenangriffe schwer beschädigt. Fünf Jahre später malte Beckmann dieses Motiv. Darin sind noch immer Tarnnetze über einigen Gebäuden zu sehen. Das Abbild der Zerstörungen ist auch als Warnung vor den grausamen Auswirkungen des Krieges zu verstehen. Manuela Husemann
