Carus war Gynäkologe, Naturforscher und Schriftsteller. 1816 begann er zu malen. Stilistisch stehen seine Werke jenen von Caspar David Friedrich sehr nahe. Doch im Unterschied zu diesem, der nie in Italien war, unternahm Carus drei Reisen dorthin. Sein stimmungsvolles Bild Abend am Meer dürfte von den schroffen Küsten am Golf von Neapel oder von der Insel Capri inspiriert sein. Die mächtigen Gesteinsformationen faszinierten den Künstler, der sich besonders für Geologie interessierte: Sie waren für ihn Forschungsgegenstand und Spiegel der Urgeschichte der Erde.
