Mit dem Bildnis des Dichters Peter Hille (1854–1904) hatte Corinth gleich nach seiner Übersiedlung von München nach Berlin großen Erfolg bei der Ausstellung der dortigen Secession im Jahr 1902. Hille war ein sozialistischer Intellektueller, der zeitlebens in prekären Verhältnissen lebte. Er vagabundierte durch ganz Europa, bis er um die Jahrhundertwende in Berlin zu einer Kultfigur der Boheme wurde. Angeblich saß er Corinth für 37 Mark in dessen Atelier Modell. Hille wirkt hier rastlos wie immer: Mantel, Hut und Zeitung zeigen ihn im Aufbruch begriffen.
