Diese Ölskizze datierte und lokalisierte Wagner auf den Tag genau: „Rom d. 12. Feb. 23.“. Das Blatt zeigt ein Motiv, das der Künstler unmittelbar vor Augen hatte. Demonstrativ verriegelt die Stadtmauer den Blick in die Ferne. Doch gerade in dem unkonventionellen Bildausschnitt liegt die Stärke und Frische der Arbeit. Die Agave, auf deren Blättern das Licht spielt, ist brillant vollendet, während andere Partien in lockerer, offener Handschrift wiedergegeben werden. Wagner, der seit 1820 Hofmaler des Herzogs von Meiningen war, lebte von 1822 bis 1825 in Rom. Heute gelten seine Ölskizzen als seine qualitätvollsten Werke. Dorothee Hansen
