Auf Liebermanns Anregung hin beschloss Slevogt 1901, von München nach Berlin zu ziehen. Er machte einige Wochen in Frankfurt am Main Station. Im dortigen Zoo fertigte er 29 Ölbilder, zahlreiche Aquarelle und Zeichnungen an, darunter Die schwarzen Panther. Farbigkeit und Strenge der Komposition erinnern stilistisch an Édouard Manet. Die Lichtreflexe auf den Gitterstäben erzeugen ein Flimmern, das den unruhigen Gang des Panthers spüren lässt. Das erinnert an Rainer Maria Rilkes berühmtes Gedicht „Der Panther“, das jedoch erst zwei Jahre später in Paris entstand.
