Seit seinen Studien für das Amsterdamer Waisenhaus etwa dreißig Jahre zuvor hatte sich Liebermann vielfach mit den sozialen Einrichtungen Hollands beschäftigt. Das Proveniershuis in Haarlem war ein Altersheim, in das man sich einkaufte. Die Ansicht von dessen Garten ist Liebermanns letztes Werk zu diesem Themenkomplex. Während in seinen früheren Bildern die Menschen eine zentrale Rolle spielen, geht es hier vor allem um die Atmosphäre: eine beschauliche Stadtlandschaft mit einem sonnenbeschienenen Rasenstück.
