Pissarro, der von der dänischen Antilleninsel St. Thomas stammte, kam 1855 nach Paris. Dort lernte er Cézanne, Monet und Armand Guillaumin kennen. Gemeinsam entwickelten sie in den 1860er-Jahren einen naturalistischen Stil, der dem Impressionismus vorausging. Die Landschaft bei Ennery, nahe Pontoise ist dafür charakteristisch: ein schlichtes Motiv und kräftige, flächig aufgetragene Farben. Pissarro wohnte von 1866 bis 1868 sowie von 1872 bis 1882 in Pontoise. Im nahe gelegenen Auvers-sur-Oise hatten Charles-François Daubigny und später auch Van Gogh ihre Ateliers.
