The head of the philosopher is made of a gray-veined marble and retains a grayish-yellow patina with some incrustation. He is bald on the crown with a fringe of hair circling the head. The prominent forehead, broad nose, thick lower lip, along with brows pulled together in a look of concentration, all contribute to the identification of the statue as Sokrates. The beard is long, composed of curling locks separated by deeply drilled channels. The strands are also indicated by rather deep grooves. The hair at the sides of the head flow downward in a similar manner with deep channels separating long, thick locks. Toward the back of the head, locks are incised. The very back is unmodeled. The nose, some of the beard, and moustache are broken.
