Der später oval zugeschnittene Punktierstich von Friedrich Fleischmann zeigt ein Brustporträt Ferdinand Eßlairs. Der Dargestellte hat den Körper nach rechts ins Halbprofil gewendet, Gesicht und Blick sind den Betrachtenden zugewandt. Als Vorlage diente ein Gemälde von Matthäus Christoph Hartmann. Eßlair war 1809 als Schauspieler am Hoftheater in Stuttgart engagiert; von 1815-1820 wirkte er dort als Direktor.
