In Bild und Schrift würdigt der Stich die Verdienste von Paracelsus, geboren als Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim. Wenzel Hollar arbeitete die Radierung zum Teil nach einem Gemälde von Peter Paul Rubens, das den Gelehrten nahezu frontal im Brustausschnitt zeigt. Die Inschrift am unteren Rand des Blatts gibt Auskunft darüber, wo die Radierung erstanden werden konnte: "Sould by John Ouerton at the white horse neere the fountaine tauern without Neiugate.", d. h. bei John Overton in Newgate, London.
