Nachdem de Lairesse aus Lüttich in die nördlichen Niederlande immigriert war, erhielt er 1667 in Amsterdam das Bürgerrecht. Mit der Palastarchitektur und dem prächtigen Vorhang hat er in diesem Bild barocke Motive verwendet, die gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts auch im Norden zunehmend in Mode kamen. Das nackte Kind macht Seifenblasen: Die schillernden, kurzlebigen Gebilde sind bis heute ein Symbol für Vergänglichkeit. „Homo bulla“ („Der Mensch ist eine Seifenblase“) lautet bereits ein antikes Sprichwort. Teurer Schmuck und irdische Güter sind vor diesem Hintergrund nur nutzloses Zeug zur Befriedigung der Eitelkeit. Dorothee Hansen
