In this image executed in opaque watercolor (gouache) on parchment, the Christian saint Paul pensively sits on a bench, gesturing to the background, where the scene of his conversion to Christianity on the way to Emmaus is just barely visible. The elegant, elongated figure (influenced by Michelangelo’s famed sculpture of Moses), soft pastels, and stippling of the wall suggest that the unknown artist of this watercolor strove to emulate the style of Giulio Clovio, the most celebrated illuminator of sixteenth-century Italy. Imitators of Clovio, such as this artist, catered to contemporary collectors’ taste for images associated with well-known Roman artworks of the past.
