Angekauft wurde das Gemälde als vermeintliches Bildnis der Königin Pauline, die den württembergischen König Wilhelm (reg. 1816-1864) ein Jahr nach dem Tod Katharinas geheiratet hat. Es ist jedoch unwahrscheilich, dass der Nachruhm Katharinas auch für die neue Königin so prestigeträchtig war, dass sie sich vor dem Bildnis ihrer Vorgängerin sowie einer Ansicht von deren Mausoleum auf dem Rotenberg darstellen ließ. Vermutlich ist neben dem Porträt Wilhelms daher vielmehr Katharinas Tochter Marie wiedergegeben.
