The posture and attire of this landsknecht, or mercenary soldier, indicates that he is a proud man whose valor is unquestionable. He stands with his head thrown back, one hand on his hip and the other grasping a lance that is bisected by the sword hanging from his waist. Slits decorate his fancy clothing, which was designed to show off his large calves--considered an attractive attribute during this period. In this striking portrait, the soldier conveys intense dedication to his profession. The landsknecht, known for arrogant behavior, is an intriguing figure that was extremely popular amongst artists in the 1500s.
