This life size statue represents an athletic nude man bending forward in an active pose. The slope of the back and the position of the shoulders indicate that the arms were held in front of the body, close to the thighs. Already in antiquity, the statue’s arms had broken off and needed to be reattached; the large holes drilled into his thighs are evidence of this ancient repair. The figure may be a representation of an athlete about to jump, but the exact meaning of the pose is unclear. Although several other statues of this type (called “Castelgandolfo-Budapest” in scholarship) are known, none survive with their original head or arms. A replica of this type in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome was found alongside a statue of the Minotaur, leading some scholars to identify the type as a representation of Theseus, the Minotaur slayer.
