The women depicted outdoors by Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot are usually enjoying leisure activities in urban or suburban gardens or parks. During the same era, scenes of rural labor were popular subjects for many painters, who sometimes turned to photographs as models for the figures in those paintings. Another print of this photograph and several other images of the same girl were owned by the novelist Victor Hugo, a champion of the working classes. Edmond Bacot took them while visiting Hugo.
